Figure/Ground Studies

These drawings constitute a series of formal experiments working with a restricted set of components that reoccur across multiple works.

They have in common a preoccupation with the relationship between figure and ground, in such a way that both elements constitute each other in a fluid way; the paper is not merely a backdrop for line to emerge - line also constructs the 'background as open space' (following Badiou).

Some drawings more explicitly abstract away from figurative traditions to achieve this, while others occupy an uneasy terrain wherein forms and lines intersect in unexpected ways.
