Scholar Stones

This is a series of digital artworks playing with the concept of a 'Scholar Stone' or 'Scholar Rock' - natural rock forms that are traditionally prized by edcuated people in Southeast Asia for their natural sculptural beauty. I used digital animation software to create sculptural objects with a rock-like appearance, placed against a shallow backdrop of interlacing planes.

Formally this creates an interesting dynamic of flat and protruding forms, but extracts from editorial news video are broadcast onto the flattened backdrop, setting up an absurd interplay between this placid, useless object of contemplation obscuring a view of slow-motion world collapse.
